Kiwi Self Contained helps make the process clear, practical and straightforward. We offer self-containment inspections for vehicles that need to meet New Zealand’s current Green Warrant requirements, with testing available in Auckland, Christchurch, Waikato and selected remote locations.

Self-containment inspections made simple

The current New Zealand self-containment system requires vehicles to meet specific requirements for the toilet, fresh water, wastewater, ventilation, sink and rubbish storage.

For certification, your vehicle must be fully set up and ready to inspect. That means your water system, wastewater system, toilet, ventilation and rubbish storage all need to be installed and usable in the vehicle.

Our aim is to keep the process simple: clear guidance before your appointment, a practical inspection, and certification once your vehicle meets the requirements.

Inspection Process

We’ve made the self-containment inspection process simple and straightforward, so you know exactly what to do before your appointment.

Step 1

Book your inspection

Choose your local inspection officer and book a time that suits. If you are in a remote location, contact us first to check whether remote testing may be possible.

Step 2

Get your vehicle ready

Make sure your toilet, fresh water, wastewater, sink, ventilation and rubbish storage are installed, secure and ready to inspect.

Step 3

Attend your inspection

Bring your campervan, caravan or motorhome fully set up as it would be used for camping. Your inspector will check the setup against the current requirements.

Step 4

Certification completed

If your vehicle meets the requirements, your Green Warrant self-containment certification can be completed and your card issued.

Step 5

Travel with confidence

Once certified, you can travel knowing your vehicle has been checked against the current New Zealand self-containment requirements.

  • Selected remote locations by arrangement

Remote inspections may be available in some cases where there is no local inspector, the vehicle is in a rural area, or travelling to an inspection location is not practical.

What your vehicle needs before inspection

Before booking, check that your vehicle has:

  • A fixed toilet that is usable inside the vehicle
  • A fresh water supply
  • A wastewater system
  • A sink
  • Ventilation for the wastewater system
  • Secure rubbish storage
  • A setup that is practical and accessible when the vehicle is being used for camping

If something is missing or not yet fitted, you may need to update your setup before it can be certified.

Toilet requirements

For Green Warrant self-containment certification, the toilet must be fixed to the vehicle and usable inside the vehicle.

If your toilet is under a bed or stored in a tight space, it still needs to be practical to use. For example, if the toilet is under a bed, you need to be able to move or stack the mattress sections so the toilet can be accessed and used when needed.

A portable toilet may be suitable if it is fixed correctly and the waste tank can still be removed for emptying without removing the whole toilet.

Self-containment certification is valid for up to four years, as long as the vehicle continues to meet the requirements.

Yes. For Green Warrant self-containment certification, the toilet must be fixed to the vehicle and usable inside the vehicle.

Yes. We inspect a range of campervans, caravans and motorhomes. If you are unsure whether your setup is suitable, please contact us before booking.

In some Auckland cases, collection may be possible. Otherwise, the Green Warrant card can be posted to you after certification is completed.

We can usually post the card to a trusted address, accommodation provider or campground. If you are in Auckland, collection may be possible by arrangement.

Most inspections take less than an hour, depending on the vehicle and how straightforward the setup is.

Remote inspections may be available in selected cases, especially for rural or remote areas where no local inspector is available. Please contact us first so we can confirm whether remote testing is suitable for your vehicle.

If your vehicle does not meet the requirements on the day, your inspector will explain what needs to be fixed or changed before certification can be completed.

To become a Self-Containment Officer with Kiwi Self Contained, you will need to understand the current regulations, complete training, pass a competency test and complete your first inspections under supervision before being approved to inspect independently.
