This is a preparation guide, not a claim about inspection failure statistics. Work through the finished vehicle before booking, and ask your inspector about anything uncertain.
1. Check the whole vehicle
A set of new parts is a starting point. The inspector assesses the completed installation for the people the vehicle will accommodate. Check your six self-containment systems together.
Set the van up as you actually use it. Put your normal bedding, luggage and cooking equipment in place so access problems are easier to spot.
2. Try the toilet in the real layout
Check that the toilet is permanently fixed, usable inside and that its waste can be emptied without removing the base. Do not assume a bracket alone guarantees acceptance.
- Check the exact toilet and bracket compatibility.
- Try the seat, lid and access with normal gear in the van.
- Check the supports and fixings, including any sliding installation.
See the Fix-a-Potty installation guide and ask your inspector about your layout.
3. Check usable water capacity
Read the actual tank markings and plan for everyone staying for three days. Allow for water used by the toilet or other facilities. Nominal tank size and usable capacity are not always the same.
Check that fresh water stays clean, tanks are secure and access for filling and emptying is practical. Mark fresh-water and wastewater containers clearly.
4. Run water through the system
Fill the fresh-water tank, operate the tap and run water into the sink. Watch every connection, the underside of the sink and the tank penetrations. Check that wastewater reaches the correct tank and does not escape into the van.
Look for kinks, poor hose support or joints under strain. Follow the fitting and sealant instructions and let sealants cure before testing. Use our grey-water setup guide for the system we sell.
5. Inspect vents, emptying and rubbish storage
Make sure tank ventilation is correctly installed and clear. A tank vent is different from an open window. Check the intended exterior termination and hygienic waste-disposal arrangement with your inspector.
Test removal and reconnection of any removable waste tank. Have a secure rubbish container with a lid and sufficient storage for your trip.
6. Arrive ready to demonstrate
Bring any documents the inspection provider requests. Keep tanks, valves and mounting points accessible. Be ready to show how filling, toilet emptying and wastewater disposal work.
Ask the provider about the fee, levy, appointment and reinspection arrangements before you book. Enquire about an inspection when the installation is complete.
