Getting ready for your green warrant inspection? Start with these six checks, then work through anything your vehicle still needs.
The key distinction: your vehicle needs to meet the legal requirements for at least three days for everyone it is certified to carry. Litre figures below are PGDB inspection guidance, rather than fixed tank-size rules written into the regulations. Your inspector assesses the complete setup.
Six checks before your inspection

Fresh water
Use a secure, suitable drinking-water tank and fittings that protect the water from contamination. Have a clean way to fill it. PGDB guidance recommends 12 litres per person for three days, with more for flushing toilets or other water-using facilities.

Grey water
Collect and store wastewater hygienically, secure the tank and vent it to the exterior. Plan how you will empty it at an appropriate disposal facility. PGDB guidance recommends wastewater capacity at least equal to fresh-water capacity, or a way to monitor the level where the wastewater tank is smaller.

A fixed, usable toilet
The toilet must be permanently fixed with its base rigidly mounted, usable inside the vehicle, and able to be emptied without removing its base. Check the space to sit and use it comfortably. PGDB guidance recommends at least three litres of toilet waste capacity per person.
A bracket alone does not guarantee certification. Confirm your exact toilet and emptying arrangement with your inspector.

A sink
Install it safely, connect it to the wastewater tank and include an appropriate water trap. It needs to work for handwashing and dishwashing.

Rubbish storage
Provide secure, fit-for-purpose rubbish storage. PGDB guidance recommends a sealable container with at least one litre per person per day for three days.

Ventilation
Provide ventilation that removes odours and reduces foul air or gases entering the vehicle. Check the wastewater vent as well as the vehicle’s ventilation.
Ready for an inspection?
- Run water through the sink and check every joint for leaks.
- Check the tanks and toilet cannot move during travel.
- Make filling, emptying and toilet use easy to demonstrate.
- Ask about any uncertain part of your setup before the appointment.
